Downingtown Clinches Playoff Birth in 2OT Thriller

For years, the Coatesville Red Raiders had been known as the most dominant team in the Ches-Mont, winning all but three games against conference appointments– Downingtown West, Downingtown East, and Bishop Shanahan – since 2011.dtown

The Red Raiders were the clear underdog on the road, going up against the 2014 Ches-Mont Champion the Downingtown West Whippets in the state qualifier on Tuesday night. However, they fought hard and appeared ready to regain their title as the area’s top team.

The Whippets started the game drawing first blood with a layup from Jr. Guard, Ryan Betley in the opening seconds of the game, the Whippets (23-5, 11-1) trailed for the next thirty-one minutes of play.

The Red Raiders played stifling defense, never relinquishing their grip on the lead they had. They lead ending the first quarter up 15-12 and also lead at half time 27-24. Ending the third quarter the Whippets trailed 40-31, which was the Red Raiders biggest advantage of the night. This seemed so easy for Coatesville who were playing a full court press, causing Downingtown to turn the ball over 15 times on the night.

The Whippets were unable to tie the score again until Betley took a hand-off from Jr. F, Josh Warren and sank a 3-pointer that tied the game at 48. The momentum certainly shifted as the West crowd rose from their seats, verifying their home court advantage. Betley’s clutch shot came with only 12 seconds left in the 4th quarter, forcing two overtimes.

Betley wasn’t the only Whippet with a clutch play, as fellow Jr. G/F, Dom Guerrera finished off the first OT with a driving layup to tie the game at 53, with only seven seconds on the clock.

Coatesville did not have the energy after playing such great defense for first four quarters of the game. The Whippets definitely had more stamina in the 2nd OT and ended the night with a 70-63 Victory!

The Whippets will now go on to the state playoffs clinching a spot in the PIAA Class 4A state bracket. They will take on Penncrest High School at home on Friday Feb. 27th to determine the 9th and 10th seeds from District 1.

Key Players:

Ryan Betley (Jr.)-  finished out the night 31 points
